We started HostingSpotter because every other "best web hosting" site we landed on was a pay-to-rank affiliate farm with conveniently buried renewal pricing. So we built the site we wished existed: real prices, real tests, real reviews.
Why we built this
If you've bought web hosting in the last decade you've felt it: the $2.99/month intro that quietly renews at $17.99/month. The "unlimited" bandwidth that triggers a polite upgrade prompt once your site gets real traffic. The 24/7 chat support that routes you to a script reading the same docs you already saw.
Most hosting review sites won't tell you any of that, because the providers paying the highest commissions are also the ones with the worst renewal-price hikes. HostingSpotter ranks providers on renewal-price transparency, not commission rate.
How we rank web hosts
Every host in our catalog gets evaluated on five things:
- Renewal pricing — we surface intro AND year-two pricing side by side. Providers that hide their renewal pricing rank lower than equivalents that show it upfront.
- Real speed tests— GTmetrix and PageSpeed scores from actual sites hosted on the provider, not the provider's own marketing numbers.
- Uptime tracking— 12-month availability data, not the "99.99%" claim from the homepage.
- Community reviews — aggregated user ratings, weighted by review count. A 4.9 with 12 reviews ranks below a 4.6 with 1,200.
- Support quality — we test response times, escalation paths, and whether real questions get real answers.
How we make money
We're an affiliate site. When you click through to a provider and buy a plan, HostingSpotter earns a commission. That commission does not influence ranking — every link goes through a transparent /affiliate/ redirect with rel="sponsored", and the commission rate of a host is never a ranking signal. We also run a Pro subscription and a newsletter sponsor program for users and vendors who want more.

What we don't do
- We don't accept payment for placement in "best of" lists.
- We don't hide renewal prices to keep affiliate numbers up.
- We don't auto-generate reviews. Tool descriptions are AI-assisted; rankings are not.
